DUBAI – Dubai Municipality has introduced the ‘Smart Municipality Eye’, a pioneering initiative deploying artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor and manage the city’s vast green spaces.

The advanced aerial system is designed to enhance proactive urban management by providing real-time data on plant health, irrigation efficiency, and environmental conditions. The initiative supports Dubai’s vision of a sustainable, data-driven urban ecosystem powered by predictive analytics.

The drones, operating across an expansive area of 52 million square metres, will perform both aerial and field mapping to analyse vegetation health and detect irrigation or pest-related issues before they escalate. The collected data will be processed through AI-powered platforms that enable predictive maintenance – a major leap from reactive to anticipatory municipal management.

What is Smart Municipality Eye?

The Smart Municipality Eye represents Dubai’s latest innovation in environmental stewardship and urban oversight. The initiative allows the Municipality to remotely and intelligently manage parks, landscapes, and other green infrastructure. By using high-resolution imagery and AI analytics, the system can identify early signs of stress in plants, optimise water consumption, and recommend corrective action in real time.

This initiative strengthens Dubai Municipality’s operational agility, ensuring that challenges – from pest infestations to inefficient irrigation – are resolved swiftly and sustainably. It also enhances the visual appeal of Dubai’s landscape, aligning with the city’s broader ambition to remain among the world’s most liveable and sustainable urban centres.

How will the technology be implemented?

To accelerate the deployment of drone technologies, Dubai Municipality has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Eanan Al Samma for Remote-Controlled Aircraft Manufacturing. The collaboration focuses on developing and integrating advanced drone systems and AI solutions for municipal, inspection, and environmental monitoring tasks.

The agreement was signed during Urban Future Week, held at the Museum of the Future on 10 and 11 November, an event bringing together global experts and policymakers to explore forward-thinking urban solutions.

Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, stated that this collaboration reinforces Dubai’s proactive leadership in AI-driven municipal operations. “We are not merely planting trees; we are designing and preserving Dubai’s environmental and visual identity with precision,” he said.

Rashid Hamdan bin Khadim Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Eanan Al Samma, noted that the partnership aligns with Dubai’s strategic vision for sustainability and technological advancement. “This agreement reflects our shared commitment to developing intelligent systems that enhance operational efficiency and improve quality of life,” he added.

Under the MoU, both organisations will exchange technical expertise and develop pilot projects to refine drone deployment across municipal operations. The initiative will enhance Dubai Municipality’s capacity for flexible, efficient service delivery while strengthening its preparedness for future urban challenges.
